Sensor Film for Measuring Compression
The sensor comes in the form of a large, thin film that, when placed in between impacting or mating surfaces, instantaneously and permanently changes color. The intensity of this color is proportional to the amount of force applied, allowing the user to determine the stress characteristics across the surface. Precise PSI (kg/cm²) can be determined by comparing the sensor film to a color calibration chart, or by using one of several imaging systems that the company supplies.
The film is useful in a large variety of applications in R&D and QC, including measuring nip pressure and roll contact pressure in coating machines. The film aids in determination of uniform loading in a press's cross direction, as well as improving felt and cover life and consistent web compaction. Both dynamic and static impression can be taken. According to the manufacturer, the sensor can ensure parallelism between nipped rolls during roll changing as well as during routine downtime. The film is also well suited for determining crown correction, revealing damage to roll coverings and indicating roll wear.
