Wiscassett Mills was founded in 1898, in Albemarle, North Carolina by James W. Cannon. During the early 1900's, Wiscassett grew as raw stock dyeing, yarn dyeing, and combing capabilities were added. During World War II, large quantities of Wiscassett yarns were used for machine gun belts, dyed underwear, parachute harnesses and other defense items.

Wiscassett Mills Company is currently one of the leading independent yarn manufacturers in the United States. Wiscassett supplies yarn to the circular knitting trade for such end products as tee-shirts, sweatshirts, hosiery and outerwear fabrics and also supplies yarn to the woven fabric's trade for home furnishings.

With the upward trend in home furnishings, with large increases in cotton throws and 100% cotton upholstery fabrics, Wiscassett is one of the leading suppliers to these markets, with one of its Open-End mills exclusively producing coarse-count single and plied yarns for this trade.
